Remove the ** asterisks and # marks from AI text and keep it readable

Remove asterisks with Chat Export

The page opens with a sample study plan full of ** bold marks, ### headings and a table. Tap Plain text and the clean version is copied: headings as normal lines, bullets as •, the table as readable rows, and no asterisks or pound signs.

  1. Paste the AI text on this page.
  2. Tap Plain text. The clean text is copied straight away.
  3. Paste it into your email, form, document or message.
  4. Use WhatsApp or LinkedIn instead if you want the bold parts kept in those apps' own way.

What to know

The asterisks are Markdown, the formatting language AI chats write in: **text** means bold, *text* italic, and lines starting with # are headings. The chat window shows the formatting, but many places you paste into (email bodies, web forms, SMS, some document editors) show the raw symbols instead. Deleting them by hand is slow and easy to get wrong when an answer is long.

This conversion reads the text as Markdown rather than deleting characters blindly, so an asterisk that is part of the content, such as 2 * 3 in a formula or a footnote mark inside code, is kept, while the formatting marks are removed. Numbered lists keep their numbers, bullets become •, nested items are indented, code blocks keep their text without the ``` fences, and links become the text followed by the address in brackets.

Tables become one block per row, which survives any text box. Plain text output is free and unlimited, and copies to the clipboard as soon as you tap it. Use it for cover letters, assignments, support replies or anything you paste into a plain text box.

Questions

Why does ChatGPT text have so many asterisks?

The answer is written in Markdown. The chat shows ** as bold, but most other apps show the raw ** characters when you paste.

Will it remove asterisks I need, like in math?

No. Only formatting marks are removed. An asterisk that is part of the content, for example in 2 * 3 or inside code, stays.

What happens to tables?

Each row becomes a short block of Header: value lines so it stays readable without a grid.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Text outputs are created in your browser and nothing is counted or uploaded.

The free plan covers everything on this page. Chat Export Pro ($9.50 until Oct 25, then $19, paid once) is described on the Chat Export page.
