ChatGPT to Word with Chat Export
The page opens with a sample study plan written by an AI chat: headings, a numbered list with a nested list, a table and a code block. Tap Word to get a .docx in which every heading is a Word heading, the lists are real Word lists and the table has a header row.
- Copy the answer with the copy icon under it, so the formatting comes along as Markdown.
- Tap Paste on this page and check the preview.
- Tap Word. On a phone choose where to send it (Drive, Docs, email); on a computer it downloads.
- Open it in Word or Google Docs. Headings appear in the navigation pane and the lists renumber if you edit them.
What to know
Pasting a chat answer straight into Word often brings either raw symbols (##, **, |) or a mix of web styles that do not behave like Word formatting. This page builds the document from the structure of the answer instead: level-one to level-six headings use Word's built-in Heading styles, bold and italic stay, links stay clickable, and inline code uses a monospace character style.
Lists are written as real Word numbering, including lists inside lists, so adding an item renumbers the rest. Tables get borders, a shaded header row that repeats at the top of each page, and column widths based on their content. Code blocks keep their indentation in a monospace paragraph with a light background.
What does not convert: math stays as text rather than becoming a Word equation, images in the answer become a short placeholder, and tables with merged cells are not possible in Markdown to begin with. Free files carry a one-line footer; Pro removes it and adds fonts, margins, a title page and coloured code.

Questions
Does the Word file keep the formatting from the chat?
It keeps the structure: headings, bold, italic, links, numbered and bulleted lists (also nested), tables with a header row, quotes and code blocks. It does not copy the chat's colours or fonts; it uses Word styles you can change in one place.
Can I open the file in Google Docs?
Yes. Upload it to Google Drive or share it to the Docs app from your phone's share sheet; headings and lists are recognised.
Why does the page say the clipboard is blocked?
Some browsers ask for permission before a page reads the clipboard, or do not allow it. Allow it when asked, or long-press in the text box and choose Paste.
How many Word files can I make for free?
Two Word, PDF or Excel files a day, up to 20,000 characters each. Copying the text for WhatsApp, LinkedIn or as plain text is unlimited.
The free plan covers everything on this page. Chat Export Pro ($9.50 until Oct 25, then $19, paid once) is described on the Chat Export page.
