Copy an AI table into Google Sheets with every value in its own cell

Table to Google Sheets with Chat Export

The page opens with a sample report that contains a table of quarterly numbers. Tap Excel to save an .xlsx file that opens in Google Sheets from Drive, then use Copy for Google Sheets to put the same table on the clipboard as tab-separated text.

  1. Copy the answer in the chat with the copy icon, then tap Paste here.
  2. Tap Excel. On a phone, share the file to Google Drive and open it with Sheets.
  3. On a computer you can instead tap Copy for Google Sheets in the result and paste into cell A1 of a sheet.
  4. Check that number columns are right-aligned in Sheets: that means they came in as numbers.

What to know

Pasting a Markdown table from a chat into Google Sheets puts each whole line, pipes and all, into a single cell. Sheets splits pasted text into cells only when the values are separated by tabs. The Copy for Google Sheets button converts the table to exactly that: one row per line, one tab between cells, no pipes or dashes, bold marks removed.

On a phone, the most reliable route is the file: the .xlsx goes to Google Drive from the share sheet and opens in the Sheets app with a header row, number formats and a filter already set. Amounts and percentages arrive as numbers; IDs like 007 stay as text, which a plain paste into Sheets would turn into 7.

If the answer has several tables, choose one under Options, or use Pro to save all of them as separate sheets in one workbook. Copying as text is free and unlimited; files count toward the free 2 a day.

Questions

Why does my pasted table end up in one column in Google Sheets?

The chat copies the table as Markdown text with | between cells. Sheets only splits on tabs. Copy for Google Sheets on this page converts it to tab-separated text.

Does this work in the Sheets app on a phone?

Save the .xlsx file and open it in Sheets from Google Drive. Pasting tab-separated text into the phone app is less predictable, so the file is the dependable way.

Will leading zeros survive?

In the .xlsx file, yes: values like 007 are stored as text. When you paste text into Sheets yourself, Sheets may remove them, so use the file for ID columns.

Can I get a CSV instead?

The .xlsx opens everywhere a CSV does and keeps number formats. Google Sheets can save it as CSV with File, Download.
