ChatGPT table to Excel: save the table from an answer as a real .xlsx file

Table to Excel with Chat Export

The page opens with a sample answer that contains an inventory table. Tap Excel and you get an .xlsx file with a bold, frozen header row and a filter; prices and quantities are real numbers you can sum, while supplier IDs such as 007 stay text.

  1. In the chat, tap the copy icon under the answer (it copies the table as Markdown, with the | characters).
  2. Open this page and tap Paste. The preview shows the table as a grid; the Excel button shows how many tables it found.
  3. Tap Excel. On a phone the share sheet opens, so you can send the file to Drive, email or WhatsApp; on a computer it downloads.
  4. Open the file in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice. If the answer had several tables, pick one under Options.

What to know

Chat answers draw tables in Markdown: a header row, a line of dashes, then one row per line with cells separated by |. Pasted straight into Excel, that arrives as one long text cell per row. This page reads the table the way the chat displayed it and writes each cell into its own spreadsheet cell, so the columns line up without Text to Columns.

Numbers are converted carefully. A value like 1,250.50 or $89.99 becomes a number with a matching format, 15% becomes 0.15 shown as a percentage, and a minus sign is kept. Anything that would be damaged by conversion stays text exactly as typed: IDs with leading zeros (007, 0142), digit strings longer than 15 digits such as card or account numbers, phone numbers and dates. That way nothing is silently rounded or reformatted.

If the answer was copied by selecting the text instead of using the copy icon, tables usually arrive as tab-separated lines. Those are recognised as a table too. If no table is found, the page tells you and offers Word or PDF instead. Free makes one sheet per file; Pro puts every table of the answer into one workbook, one sheet each, plus an All tables sheet with them stacked.

Questions

Will the numbers in the Excel file be real numbers?

Yes, when they look like plain numbers, amounts with $, €, £ or ₹, thousands separators or percentages. They are stored as numbers you can sum and chart. IDs with leading zeros, very long digit strings, phone numbers and dates stay text so they are not changed.

What if the answer has more than one table?

Free saves one table per file: choose which under Options. Pro saves all of them in one workbook with a sheet per table, named after the heading above each table, plus an All tables sheet.

Do I need Excel installed on my phone?

No. The .xlsx file opens in Google Sheets, the Microsoft Excel app, WPS or LibreOffice, and you can share it to Google Drive from the share sheet.

Is the answer uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is built in your browser. Only a count request (a random ID for this browser and a one-way hash of your network address) is sent for the free daily limit.

The free plan covers everything on this page. Chat Export Pro ($9.50 until Oct 25, then $19, paid once) is described on the Chat Export page.
