SMS QR code with QR Studio
The code opens the messaging app with your number and a pre-typed message. It is a good fit for keywords such as JOIN or MENU.
- Enter the phone number in international format.
- Type the message people should send, such as a keyword.
- Download the code and scan it with an iPhone and an Android phone.
- Print it where the offer is explained.
What to know
The code uses the SMSTO format, which both iPhones and Android phones understand: scanning opens the messaging app with the number filled in and the text typed, ready to send. The person still has to press send, so there is no way to text someone without their action.
Keywords work well: "Text JOIN to enter" with a code beside it removes the typing. If you collect numbers this way, remember that the person has consented only to the message they sent, and follow the rules for messaging in your region.
Messaging apps differ in how they handle pre-filled text, and some desktop scanners ignore the message. Test on the phones your customers use before printing. A short code or keyword also lets you test two posters by giving each its own keyword, and counting replies is simple.

Questions
How do I make a QR code that sends a text message?
Enter the number and a message above and download the code. Scanning it opens the messaging app with both filled in; the person presses send.
Can the QR code send the SMS automatically?
No. Phones always require the person to press send.
What number format should I use?
International format with the country code, for example +15551234567.
Why is the message empty on some phones?
A few messaging apps ignore pre-filled text from QR codes. The number will still be filled in. Test on the phones your audience uses.
