What to know

An email code is a mailto: link with the subject and body encoded. Scanning it opens the default mail app with a new message addressed to you, so the person only has to press send. Mail apps vary slightly in how they treat line breaks in the body, so keep it to one or two short lines.

A pre-filled subject helps you sort incoming messages. "Question about my order" or "Feedback from the market stall" tells you the context before you open the email. Keep the body short, because every character makes the code denser.

The address is stored in the picture, so it cannot be changed after printing. Use a role address such as hello@ or support@ that will outlive any one person. If you ever need to change the destination, make the code a trackable link that points at a mailto address you control on a web page, which you can edit.

Questions

How do I make a QR code for an email address?

Enter the address, an optional subject and message, and download the code. Scanning it opens a new email to that address.

Can the QR code pre-fill the subject and message?

Yes. The subject and body are encoded into the mailto link.

Do email QR codes work on all phones?

Yes, iPhone and Android camera apps open the default mail app. If the phone has no mail app set up, nothing opens.

Is my email address visible in the code?

Yes. Anyone who scans the code, or decodes the picture, can read the address. Use an address that is meant to be public.
