QR code as SVG for print: a sharp vector code at any size

QR code SVG for print with QR Studio

This opens on a standard black-on-white link code. Download the SVG for the printer: it is one shape that scales without blur, from a business card to a billboard.

  1. Enter the address and keep dark on light with high contrast.
  2. Choose error correction Q for print, which tolerates scuffs and ink noise.
  3. Download the SVG and place it in your layout; do not stretch it unevenly.
  4. Print a proof at the real size and scan it before the full run.

What to know

An SVG is made of shapes, not pixels, so it stays sharp at any size and printers can convert it to any colour space. A PNG is fine for screens and small prints; for packaging, signs and posters, use the SVG, or a PNG at 4096 px.

Print rules that matter more than the format: keep the white border (the quiet zone, 4 modules is the standard), print dark on light, never invert the colours, and size the code to the scanning distance: about one tenth of the distance as the width, for example 10 cm wide for a poster read from one metre.

If your printer needs CMYK, hand them the SVG and ask them to set the code to pure black (K only) rather than a rich black, which can blur at the edges on misregistered presses. Always print one proof at the final size and scan it with two different phones before the full run goes to press.

Questions

How do I download a QR code as an SVG?

Create the code, then press Download SVG. The file is a vector, so it scales to any size without blur.

What is the best QR code format for printing?

SVG (or EPS/PDF) for professional printing; a 2048 or 4096 px PNG for office printers. Vector files stay sharp at any size.

How big should a printed QR code be?

Roughly one tenth of the scanning distance in width, and never smaller than 2 cm. Keep a white border around the code.

Why does my printed QR code not scan?

The usual causes are low contrast, an inverted (light on dark) code, a missing white border, a code that is too small, or too much data packed into it.
