Sequential barcode labels: number a series like CVX-0001 to CVX-0500

Sequential numbers with Labelsheet

This page opens on Number a series with small 80-per-sheet labels. Type the text before the number, the first number, how many you need and how many digits to pad to, and every label in the series is drawn with its own barcode: no copying, no fill-down in a spreadsheet.

  1. Type the prefix (for example CVX- or BIN-A-) and the first number.
  2. Set How many and the number of digits; 4 digits gives CVX-0001, which sorts correctly in any spreadsheet.
  3. Check the first and last code shown under the fields.
  4. Pick the label stock and download the PDF. For QR or Code 39, change Barcode type first.

What to know

Avery's own Design & Print can number labels, but its help pages note that sequential numbering is not available for UPC-A or EAN-13 barcodes,. Here a series is just a list generated in the browser, so it works with every barcode type, including EAN-13 and UPC-A where the check digit for each number is calculated for you.

Zero padding matters more than it looks. Without it, CVX-10 sorts before CVX-2 in most systems and a scanner list looks out of order; with four digits the order is the same everywhere. Pick enough digits for the largest number you will ever reach, because changing the width later means two different formats in the same register.

For a long run on a thermal printer, the PDF has one page per label, which is what Zebra, Rollo and Dymo drivers expect. The free plan prints the first sheet of the series (the first 10 labels on a roll) and Pro prints the whole run in one file.

Questions

Can I count by 5 or 10?

The series counts by one. To skip numbers, generate the list in a spreadsheet with a formula and paste it instead.

Can I make sequential QR codes?

Yes. Switch Barcode type to QR code; a prefix such as https://example.com/item/ turns every QR into a link.

What is the largest series?

5,000 labels per run. Print larger registers in batches by changing the first number.

Can I continue a series later?

Yes. Start the next batch at the next unused number with the same prefix and digits.

The free plan covers everything on this page. Labelsheet Pro ($5/mo, billed monthly) is described on the Labelsheet page.
