EAN-13 and UPC-A product labels with the check digit added for you

EAN / UPC labels with Labelsheet

This page opens with EAN-13 and a short product list on Avery 5160 sheets. Paste 12-digit numbers and the 13th check digit is calculated; paste all 13 and it is checked, so a typo is caught before it ends up on a shelf.

  1. Paste your product numbers, one per line, or the product table from your spreadsheet.
  2. Choose EAN-13 or UPC-A under Barcode type; codes that do not fit are listed with the reason.
  3. Pick the label stock and check the preview.
  4. Download the PDF and print at 100%.

What to know

EAN-13 and UPC-A both end in a check digit computed from the other digits. A label tool that prints whatever it is given will happily print a wrong check digit, and the result looks fine on paper but no till will read it. Here a 12-digit EAN (or 11-digit UPC) gets its check digit calculated, and a full-length number with the wrong check digit is left out and listed with the correct value, so you can fix the source list.

These numbers only identify a product in shops when they come from GS1 (the organisation that issues company prefixes). For your own stock, bins or internal products, Code 128 with your own codes is usually the better choice, because it does not pretend to be a registered retail number and it accepts letters. UPC-A codes are read by many systems as 13-digit EANs with a 0 in front; both forms describe the same barcode.

Questions

How is the check digit calculated?

Digits are weighted 3 and 1 alternately from the right, summed, and the check digit brings the total up to a multiple of 10.

Can I make up my own EAN numbers?

For internal use you can, but for selling in shops the numbers must come from GS1. For internal labels, Code 128 is the safer choice.

Why was one of my codes left out?

It has the wrong length, a non-digit character, or a check digit that does not match. The list under the count shows the reason for each one.

Does it do ISBN barcodes?

Yes: an ISBN-13 is an EAN-13 starting with 978 or 979, so paste it with EAN-13 selected.
