Open an Outlook .msg file on Android and save its attachments

Open .msg on Android with Mail Opener

This page opens a sample Outlook .msg from John Doe with an invoice and a photo attached, so you can see what you will get. Tap Open your email file, pick the .msg from Downloads or Files, and the email appears with its attachments ready to save or share.

  1. Download the .msg from your mail app or chat so it is in Downloads, Files or Drive.
  2. Tap Open your email file and choose the .msg. If the picker hides it, switch the picker to show all files.
  3. Read the subject, sender, recipients and the body as it was formatted.
  4. Tap Save to keep an attachment in Downloads, or Share to send it to Drive, WhatsApp or another app.

What to know

Android has no app that opens .msg files by default, and Gmail shows them as an attachment it cannot preview. A .msg is Outlook's own file for one saved email: an Office compound file with the subject, the people, the body in one or more formats and every attachment inside it. This page reads that structure in Chrome, so nothing has to be installed and the file stays on the phone.

Android file pickers often label a .msg as generic data (application/octet-stream), and some apps rename it without the extension. Mail Opener does not trust the name or the type: it reads the first bytes of the file, so a renamed .msg still opens, and a photo or PDF picked by mistake gets a plain message instead of garbage. Share hands the attachment to the Android share sheet when Chrome supports sharing that type of file; when it does not, the file is saved to Downloads and the page says so.

Questions

Why can Gmail not open the .msg attachment?

Gmail previews common files such as PDFs and images, but a .msg is Outlook's private format. Save the attachment to the phone first, then open it here.

Where do saved attachments go?

Save puts the file in Chrome's downloads, usually the Download folder. Share opens the Android share sheet so you can send it straight to Drive, Files or a chat.

Does it work without an internet connection?

The page needs to load once. Reading the file happens in the browser; the free daily count needs a connection, and if it cannot be reached one file a day still opens.

Is my email uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read by the page in your browser. The only request to us is a count for the free daily limit, which carries a random ID for this browser and the kind of file, never the email, its subject, its sender or its attachments.

The free plan covers everything on this page. Mail Opener Pro ($9.50 until Oct 25, then $19, paid once) is described on the Mail Opener page.
