.eml viewer with Mail Opener
This opens a sample .eml from John Doe with an agenda and a budget sheet attached, one of them with an accented file name. Open your own .eml, saved from Gmail, Thunderbird, Apple Mail or another app, to read it and save what is attached.
- Save the email as .eml from your mail app (in Gmail: More, then Download message).
- Tap Open your email file and choose the .eml.
- Read the email; encoded subjects and international file names are decoded.
- Save or share any attachment. A forwarded email attached inside shows as an email you can open with Pro.
What to know
An .eml file is the email exactly as it travelled: headers, then MIME parts for the text, the HTML and each attachment, usually in base64. Mail Opener decodes those parts in the browser, including encoded-word subjects and RFC 2231 file names, so a file called Budget 2026 – draft.csv keeps its name when you save it.
Attachments are saved byte for byte as they were encoded. Images referenced from the body by Content-ID are shown inside the body rather than repeated in the list. Calendar invitations appear as .ics attachments with their original line endings, which calendar apps expect. A winmail.dat inside an .eml is recognised and can be opened in place with Pro.

Questions
How do I get an .eml file from Gmail?
Open the email, choose More (the three dots), then Download message. Gmail saves it as an .eml file.
Can it show emails with non-Latin text?
Yes. Character sets declared in the email, such as UTF-8, ISO-2022-JP or Windows-1251, are decoded, in the subject, the body and the attachment names.
What about an email inside an email?
A forwarded message attached as an email is listed as an attachment. Pro opens it in place, with its own attachments.
Is my email uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read by the page in your browser. The only request to us is a count for the free daily limit, which carries a random ID for this browser and the kind of file, never the email, its subject, its sender or its attachments.
The free plan covers everything on this page. Mail Opener Pro ($9.50 until Oct 25, then $19, paid once) is described on the Mail Opener page.
