Save an Outlook .msg email as a PDF in your browser

.msg to PDF with Mail Opener

This opens a sample .msg from John Doe. Read it, then use Save as PDF (Pro) to get a PDF with the headers, the body text and the list of attachments, for a case file, an expense claim or an archive. .eml and winmail.dat export the same way.

  1. Open the .msg, .eml or winmail.dat.
  2. Check the email on screen: the PDF uses the same subject, people, date and body text.
  3. Tap Save as PDF. Free users see what Pro includes first.
  4. Save the attachments separately, or all at once as a .zip with Pro, since a PDF lists them but does not contain them.

What to know

The PDF is laid out as a document: subject as the title, then From, To, Cc and the date, a rule, the body text, and the attachment names with sizes. The body is written as text, so it can be searched and copied, and the page breaks fall between lines.

The built-in PDF font covers Western European text. When an email contains other scripts, such as Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese or emoji, the pages are drawn with your device's fonts and stored as images so nothing turns into question marks; the page tells you when that happens, because text in that PDF cannot be selected. Images and layout from the HTML body are not reproduced in the PDF; it is a record of the content.

Questions

Are the attachments inside the PDF?

No, the PDF lists their names and sizes. Save them from the attachment list, or all at once as a .zip with Pro.

Can I select the text in the PDF?

Yes for emails in Western European languages. For other scripts the pages are images and the page says so before you share the file.

Is the PDF made on a server?

No. It is written in your browser from the email you opened; nothing is sent to us.

Is my email uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read by the page in your browser. The only request to us is a count for the free daily limit, which carries a random ID for this browser and the kind of file, never the email, its subject, its sender or its attachments.

The free plan covers everything on this page. Mail Opener Pro ($9.50 until Oct 25, then $19, paid once) is described on the Mail Opener page.
