Open an .eml file on a Chromebook and read it in Chrome

.eml on Chromebook with Mail Opener

This opens a sample .eml from John Doe with the header fields highlighted. On your Chromebook, drag an .eml from the Files app onto the page, or use Open your email file, to read it with its attachments.

  1. In the Files app, find the .eml (often in Downloads).
  2. Drag it onto this page, or tap Open your email file and choose it.
  3. Read the subject, sender, recipients, date and body; save or share the attachments.
  4. Pin the page or add it to your shelf so the next .eml is one click away.

What to know

ChromeOS opens many file types itself but not .eml, and the Files app offers no app for it unless you install a mail client. Chrome can read the file through this page instead: the parsing happens in the browser tab, so it works the same on a school or work Chromebook where installing apps is blocked.

With Pro you can drop several .eml files at once and step through them with the arrow keys, see every header line (Received, Authentication-Results, Message-ID) for checking where an email came from, and save all attachments as one .zip.

Questions

Do I need to install anything on the Chromebook?

No. It runs in Chrome. You can add the page to your shelf or home screen for quick access.

Can I see the full headers?

The main headers are always shown. Pro shows every header line as received, which helps when checking where an email really came from.

Does it work on a managed school or work Chromebook?

Usually yes, because nothing is installed. If your administrator blocks this site, it will not load.

Is my email uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read by the page in your browser. The only request to us is a count for the free daily limit, which carries a random ID for this browser and the kind of file, never the email, its subject, its sender or its attachments.

The free plan covers everything on this page. Mail Opener Pro ($9.50 until Oct 25, then $19, paid once) is described on the Mail Opener page.
