Scan barcodes into Google Sheets from your phone camera

Scan to Google Sheets with Scanlist

This page opens with CSV as the export, the format Google Sheets imports directly. Scan with the camera, then share the CSV to Drive or Sheets, or import it into an existing spreadsheet with the codes kept exactly as read.

  1. Tap Start scanning and allow the camera.
  2. Scan each item; every read appears as a row with a beep. Use the quantity buttons or a note where needed.
  3. Press Export with CSV selected, then Share and choose Drive or Sheets, or Download the file.
  4. In Google Sheets choose File > Import > Upload, pick the CSV and untick Convert text to numbers, dates, and formulas.
  5. Choose Append to current sheet to add a new count under an earlier one.

What to know

Google Sheets reads the CSV as UTF-8 and ignores the byte order mark that helps Excel, so accented notes and symbols arrive intact. The one setting that matters is Convert text to numbers, dates, and formulas in the import dialog: left on, Sheets turns 0012345 into 12345 and long codes into numbers. Untick it and every code stays as text.

Copy as text in the export sheet puts the list on the clipboard with tabs between columns. Pasting that into a Sheets cell spreads it over the columns, which is quicker for a short list, but Sheets applies its own number detection to pasted values, so use the CSV import for codes with zeros at the start.

There is no live link to a spreadsheet: the scans stay in your browser until you export. That keeps the camera feed and the codes off any server, and it means a count in a basement or a warehouse with no signal still works. Export when you are back online.

Questions

Is there a Google Sheets add-on I need to install?

No. Scanlist runs in the browser and hands you a CSV. Google Sheets imports it with File > Import, or opens it directly from Drive.

Why did Sheets remove the zeros at the start from my codes?

The import converted the codes to numbers. Import again with Convert text to numbers, dates, and formulas unticked, or format the column as Plain text before pasting.

Can it write to the sheet while I scan?

No. The list is kept on your device and exported when you are ready. Nothing is uploaded while you scan.

Can several people scan into one sheet?

Each person scans into their own list and exports a CSV; import each file with Append to current sheet. Pro adds named lists so one phone can keep several counts apart.

The free plan covers everything on this page. Scanlist Pro ($5/mo, billed monthly) is described on the Scanlist page.
