Running a coding interview? Send one link to a shared editor that runs the code

Coding interview with PairPad

The pad opens with a ready interview question, Merge Intervals in solution.js, with five test cases that print PASS or FAIL, plus question.md with hints and follow-ups for you. Press Share before the call and send the candidate the link; they join without an account and you watch them type and run the tests.

  1. Before the call, press Share. The pad becomes a room at its own URL; copy the link or show the QR code.
  2. Send the link to the candidate. They pick a display name and join with no account; you see their cursor and selection in solution.js.
  3. Ask them to talk through an approach first, then code merge(). They press Run (Ctrl/Cmd+Enter) and both of you see the five PASS/FAIL lines and the count in the shared console.
  4. Use question.md for hints and follow-ups. It is visible to anyone in the room; for private notes and a four-point scorecard, use Pro interviewer notes.
  5. Afterwards, with Pro, download the room as a .zip for your records and open Replay to scrub through how the solution was written, keystroke by keystroke.

What to know

The question is chosen because it fits a 45-minute slot and shows a lot: the candidate has to see that sorting by start makes the problem linear, decide whether touching intervals merge, and handle the empty list. The five test cases cover overlap, touching ends, unsorted input, an interval that swallows the others, and empty input. A correct sort-and-sweep answer passes all five in well under a millisecond; the starter returns the input unchanged, so it starts at 1/5.

For the candidate the setup cost is zero: one link, no account, no download, any modern browser. Code runs in a sandbox in their browser, not on a server, and the output is written into the room so you see exactly what they see, labelled with who ran it and how long it took. A loop that never ends is stopped after five seconds without freezing either tab, which matters when someone is nervous and experimenting.

Supported languages for running are JavaScript, TypeScript (types are stripped, not checked) and SQL on an in-browser SQLite. Python, Java, Go and other languages can be written and discussed but do not run here, so for an interview that requires executing Python, use a tool with that interpreter. Files in the room cannot import each other, so keep each question self-contained in one file.

Everything in the free room is visible to everyone in it, including question.md, and a free room holds 3 people at once and 2 files, which fits one interviewer, one candidate and an observer. Pro ($29 once, no subscription) adds the parts interviewers need every week: notes and a scorecard stored under your account that the database rules refuse to show anyone else, a question bank to start a fresh room from a saved question in one click, a lock so only you can edit after the interview, keystroke replay, rooms of up to 10 people with unlimited files, .zip download, and rooms that never expire.

Questions

Does the candidate need to sign up or install anything?

No. They open the link in a browser, choose a display name and start typing. Rooms use anonymous sign-in behind the scenes.

Can the candidate see question.md?

Yes. Every file in a room is visible to everyone with the link. Keep private hints in Pro interviewer notes, which only the room owner can read, or off the pad.

Which languages can the candidate run?

JavaScript and TypeScript with a shared console, and SQL on an in-browser SQLite with a shared result grid. Python and other languages are highlighted but do not run.

Can I see how the candidate got to the answer?

With Pro, Replay scrubs through every keystroke of the session on a timeline. In the free room you see their typing live and the final code.

How long does the room stay available?

Free rooms are deleted 24 hours after the last activity, so send the link close to the interview. Pro rooms you own never expire, and you can lock one so nobody else can change it.

Is this an alternative to Codeshare or CoderPad?

It covers the share-a-link, edit-together and run-the-code part of those tools for JavaScript, TypeScript and SQL. It has no video call, so run the call in your usual meeting app alongside it.

The free plan covers everything on this page. PairPad Pro ($29, paid once) is described on the PairPad page.
