Quartz and Spring cron expressions: six fields, ?, L, W and #

Quartz & Spring cron with Cron Studio

This opens a Quartz expression with a seconds field: 0 0/30 8-18 ? * MON-FRI, every 30 minutes from 08:00 to 18:30 on weekdays. Edit the fields and read the explanation as you go.

  1. Read the seconds-first field order: second, minute, hour, day of month, month, day of week.
  2. Use ? in exactly one of the two day fields; * in both is rejected.
  3. Check the next runs and the explanation.
  4. Copy the unix form from the crontab tab when the expression has no Quartz-only features.

What to know

Quartz, and Spring's @Scheduled(cron = "…"), put seconds first: second, minute, hour, day of month, month, day of week, and optionally a year. A unix five-field expression pasted into Spring fails because it is a field short. Quartz also requires ? ("no specific value") in one of the two day fields, because it does not allow both to be set.

Quartz adds L (last day, or last weekday of the month), W (nearest weekday to a date, 15W), and # (nth weekday, MON#2 is the second Monday). In Quartz the day-of-week numbers run 1 to 7 with 1 as Sunday, while Spring accepts 0 to 7 with names; use MON-FRI so the schedule means the same everywhere. Because Quartz forbids a value in both day fields, a request such as "the 15th, or any Friday" cannot be written as one Quartz expression; split it into two triggers.

When an expression has no seconds other than 0 and no L, W or #, Cron Studio can also show it as a five-field crontab line, which is how you move a schedule from Spring to Kubernetes, GitHub Actions or a plain server. The reverse direction is simple too: prefix a unix expression with 0 for the seconds field and put ? in one day field.

Questions

What is the Spring cron format?

Six fields: second, minute, hour, day of month, month, day of week, for example 0 0 9 * * MON-FRI for 09:00 on weekdays. Spring does not use a year field.

What does ? mean in a cron expression?

It means "no specific value" and is allowed only in day-of-month and day-of-week. Quartz and AWS require it in one of the two, because they do not accept a value in both.

What is the difference between Quartz and unix cron?

Quartz has a seconds field, an optional year, the characters ? L W and #, and numbers weekdays from Sunday = 1. Unix cron has five fields and Sunday = 0.

Why does my Spring @Scheduled cron throw an error?

Usually it has five fields instead of six. Add a seconds field at the start, for example 0 */5 * * * * for every 5 minutes.
